GUATEMALA CITY ? A Guatemalan judge has indefinitely suspended the trial of former President Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores, saying his health must be further evaluated.
The 80-year-old Mejia is charged with crimes against humanity for allegedly overseeing a series of massacres of Mayan Indians suspected of supporting leftist guerrillas. He was president from 1983 to 1986.
Victims' lawyer Hector Reyes says the judge declared the trial indefinitely suspended Thursday because Mejia is mentally weak after suffering a stroke.
Judge Carol Flores says the former leader's health will have to be evaluated monthly.
Prior to being president, Mejia was an army general and defense minister at the height of the Central American country's 1960-1996 civil war.
