New Sundance film lets a computer shuffle the plot every time (Yahoo! News)

whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir uses a computer to create a new movie every time it's played

It's fun rewatching a?movie you love over and over again, but it sometimes gets old when you already know its plot twists like the back of your hand. Eve Sussman's new film overcomes this problem by telling a different story every time it's shown, thanks to a computer that edits it in real time.

The flick called?whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir was recently shown thrice at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and each screening told a story vastly different from the other. According to Sussman and co-writer Jeff Wood, one screening was painful to watch, one was mediocre, and one was outstanding. Their secret lies in a program that strings full a movie together out of 3,000?video clips, 150 pieces of?music, and 80 voiceovers.

Installed on a Mac G5 computer tower they dubbed "serendipity machine," the program relies on tags to choose the clips it plays ? a process similar to how internet radio?Pandora works. So if the first clip the computer picks is tagged "science," the program looks for other clips with the same tag and chooses one among them as the next sequence.

Wood and Sussman admit that the program doesn't always work the way they expect it to, but that aspect lends the movie a semblance of reality. "We all have good days and bad days. We have moments where [something] interesting happens that you might try to hold onto, but you can't. In that way, [this film] is just like life," Sussman tells Wired.

whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir focuses on a geophysicist named Holz, and has a predominantly chilly atmosphere emphasized by its grayish tone. It's inspired by classic sci-fi films?Alphaville by Jean-Luc Godard and?Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky. After Sundance, the movie will be shown at the?Berlin International Film Festival and at the?Santa Fe SITE contemporary art space.

China to make Shanghai global yuan hub by 2015 (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China intends to establish Shanghai as the global centre for yuan trading, clearing and pricing over the next three years as part of broader plans to make the commercial hub an international financial centre by 2020.

The plan for Shanghai's financial innovations through 2015, published jointly by the country's economic planning agency and the Shanghai government on Monday, set goals on a wide range of areas aimed at further developing Shanghai, though some analysts said many of them appeared ambitious.

"This anticipated pace of development looks a bit quick to me," said Frances Cheung, a strategist at Credit Agricole in Hong Kong.

China wants to transform Shanghai into an international financial centre on par with the likes of New York and London by 2020. That goal was set in 2009 by the State Council and analysts have taken it as a broad deadline for liberalizing the currency.

The state economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission, outlined a series of goals under the 2015 yuan plan.

These included making the daily yuan mid-point published by the central bank in the onshore yuan market serve as the benchmark for both domestic and foreign yuan trading markets.

Currency traders interpreted the statement partly as a message from Beijing that the yuan's movements, which have increasingly been influenced by the offshore market over the past few months, should be decided by the government.

"There have been recent developments that have put Hong Kong's offshore market in the spotlight from time to time, such as its pricing of the yuan quite differently from the onshore market," said a trader at a European bank in Shanghai.

"In this sense, the NDRC statement is published at a sensitive time and means the government once again wants to emphasize that it has the final say in the value of the yuan."

The plan also aims to make the government-backed Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate (Shibor) the benchmark for yuan credit everywhere and targeting to more than double the annual non-forex financial market trading volume to 1,000 trillion yuan by 2015.

While the plan lacked details on how China would achieve these targets, analysts were skeptical on the feasibility of some of the planks in the platform.

"Shibor is not even a very well established benchmark onshore," Cheung said. Markets currently use the government's seven-day repurchase rate as the lending benchmark.

Analysts said the NDRC's plan gave no fresh insight into how quickly China would liberalize its capital account, a crucial step in Shanghai's attempt to become a global money hub.

China has taken a series of measures over the past two years to invigorate the offshore yuan market in Hong Kong as part of a longer-term plan to promote the use of the yuan overseas and make it a fully-convertible and international reserve currency along with the U.S. dollar.

Earlier this month, Britain said it was teaming up with its former colony to secure London a top spot as an offshore trading centre for the yuan.

The NDRC's plan would not threaten Hong Kong's current position as the main offshore yuan centre, analysts said.

"Promoting Shanghai as an onshore yuan centre complements Hong Kong's growing role as an offshore yuan center, and should help to strengthen the circle of onshore-offshore yuan flows underpinning the yuan trade settlement process," said Donna H J Kwok, economist at HSBC in Hong Kong.

China will also encourage overseas companies to sell yuan-denominated shares in its domestic stock markets, but the plan did not give a detailed timetable.

Authorities have been discussing launching a so-called "international board" on the Shanghai stock exchange for listing foreign companies' shares, seen as a centerpiece for the 2020 goal, but the city's mayor said this month that the time was not currently right for its launch.

Shanghai will explore M&A opportunities involving overseas stock exchanges to increase its global clout, the NDRC's plan said without elaborating.

Columbus to host NHL All-Star game in 2013 (AP)

OTTAWA ? The Columbus Blue Jackets will host the 2013 edition of the NHL All-Star game.

Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement Saturday at the NHL Board of Governors meetings.

The Blue Jackets, who play in Nationwide Arena, had applied for hosting rights in 2013, 2014 or 2015. Next year's All-Star weekend will be Jan. 26-27 and will mark the third straight year a city has hosted the game for the first time. Raleigh, N.C., home of the Carolina Hurricanes, hosted the game last year and this year's game is Sunday in Ottawa.

"We're looking forward to bringing our All-Star celebration to Columbus," Bettman said. "The Blue Jackets did a great job of hosting the NHL Draft in 2007, and I have no doubt they will raise the bar even higher when they welcome our All-Star celebration next January."

It was welcome news for a team that is struggling this season. The Blue Jackets are 13-30-6 with a league-low 32 points. Only the Tampa Bay Lightning (165) have allowed more goals this season than Columbus (163).

"The Blue Jackets are honored to host the 2013 All-Star celebration in Columbus as we believe our city offers a truly unique setting for this special event," said Blue Jackets majority owner John P. McConnell. "As much as it is a showcase for the NHL's best players, it is also a celebration of hockey fans and having it in Columbus is a testament to the fantastic support of our fans and the strength of Central Ohio as a hockey market."

February 14th is Valen... Angry Birds day

Forget poking: from February 14th, show you love someone by flinging a mis-tempered avian toward them. It's Valentines Day that Angry Birds will finally arrive on the ubiquitous social network -- just in time to ensure half the coupled population of the world misses its dinner reservation, in order to get past one more level. The basic game will be free, but upgrades like the Mighty Eagle, double-sized birds, an earthquake weapon and a max-strength catapult will cost you. It'll be launched in Jakarta around the same time you offer up that heart-shaped box of chocolates, so if you want to ensure the day remains romantic, we'd suggest waiting until the 15th before installing.

AP Exclusive: Obama to protect US goods globally

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? President Barack Obama has adopted a new strategy declaring for the first time that the United States has a national security interest to protect the nation's economic goods against terrorists, criminals and natural disasters in all corners of the globe.

The new U.S. policy, to be unveiled Wednesday by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in Switzerland, is called the "National Strategy for Global Supply Chain Security," according to a White House document obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

It says potential economic threats to goods dependent on supplies from beyond U.S. borders are now a matter of national security and that the government must "resolve threats early."

And that's not just cargo shipments ? all "cyber and energy networks" also are affected.

Businesses have often sought to cut costs by farming out many parts of their operations, leaving them potentially more at risk to disruptions outside the confines of their traditional areas of management. But with the economy increasingly globalized, businesses are becoming more dependent on each other ? and more exposed to these risks.

"The global supply chain provides the food, medicine, energy and products that support our way of life," the document says.

"Many different entities are responsible for or reliant upon the functioning of the global supply chain, including regulators, law enforcement, public-sector buyers, private-sector business, and other foreign and domestic partners," it says. "The system relies upon an interconnected web of transportation infrastructure and pathways, information technology, and cyber and energy networks."

Obama in a preface to the new policy, which is effective immediately, that "the global supply chain system that supports this trade is essential to the United States' economy and security and is a critical global asset."

The policy follows in the wake of a series of major natural disasters whose effects spill beyond one nation's borders.

"We have seen that disruptions to supply chains caused by natural disasters ? earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions ? and from criminal and terrorist networks seeking to exploit the system or use it as a means of attack can adversely impact global economic growth and productivity," the president wrote.

"As a nation," he added, "we must address the challenges posed by these threats and strengthen our national and international policies accordingly."

The March tsunami in Japan, for example, was devastating for that nation's economy and temporarily disrupted the production of automobile makers and other manufacturers.

Car exports, too, declined after the recent flooding in Thailand, where many Japanese automakers have assembly lines. Iceland's volcanic eruption in 2010 paralyzed air traffic, affecting passengers and cargo around the world.

The White House "strategy" is not an executive order. But it instructs federal agencies to immediately focus on "those components of the worldwide network of transportation, postal and shipping pathways, assets, and infrastructures by which goods are moved until they reach an end consumer."

It also suggests that all U.S. trade partners should be pressed to agree to what Obama calls "information-sharing arrangements, streamlining government processes, and synchronizing standards and procedures."

The strategy has far-reaching implications. It not only would apply to all cargo goods entering the country by ship, airplane or truck ? the U.S. already inspects all of what it considers to be the highest-risk cargo ? but also could set the stage for U.S. action to strengthen the security provided in other countries.

Obama is requiring all federal agencies and departments to report back to him within a year on how their efforts are going and make "recommendations for future action developed during the outreach process" of talking with other countries.

'I will disappear' says Syrian who dares to speak out

"I am 65 years old and I have no life ? what happened to my country, what happened to my country?"

His agitation drew a crowd of supporters of President Bashar Assad who accused gunmen of stirring violence in Homs, scene of some of the worst bloodshed of the 10-month uprising.

"What are you doing here? Go to Baba Amro, go to Khaldiya," the man continued, referring to opposition strongholds which activists say have come under heavy fire from Assad's forces.

"What are you seeing here? Everything is clear in Syria, everything is clear," the man shouted. Until then, the journalists accompanied by heavy security had been struggling to find Homs residents to speak to on a government-organized trip.

People try to calm him down
When asked what he thought was happening in Syria, the man shouted: "Ask him, ask the president what is going on in Syria, what is going on in the country. Don't ask me."

The United Nations say 5,000 people have been killed in the crackdown, but authorities say they are fighting terrorist groups who they say have killed 2,000 soldiers and police.

Some of the men attracted by the commotion tried to calm the man down and take him back inside the cafe. The crowd grew, with many pro-Assad voices.

"What are you talking about? The city is safe," another man told him.

But he hit back: "How could you say that? How could you say it's all safe ? can you walk around?"

"I go wherever I want," the other man countered.

The man turned to the journalists and said: "They will come and get me, I fear for my life, nobody will hear about me if I give my name now. They will torture me, I will disappear."

    'He is security'
A man in his 50s whispered: "You see this man saying it's safe? He is security, from the intelligence."

Two old men standing next to him nodded, with angry looks on their faces.

"Do not listen to them, they're security," one of them said. The other two nodded.

Assad supporters said their lives had become a nightmare and they did not feel safe.

Liz Taylor-owned Dutch master coming to NY auction (omg!)

This undated photo provided by Christie's shows the early 1630s, painting by Dutch master Frans Hals titled, "Portrait of a Man." The portrait that once hung over the fireplace of Elizabeth Taylor's Bel Air home - and only recently reattributed to Hals - is expected to fetch up to $1 million at auction Wednesday, Jan 25, 2012, at Christie's in New York. (AP Photo/Christie's)

NEW YORK (AP) ? A 17th century portrait that once hung over the fireplace of Elizabeth Taylor's Bel Air home ? and only recently reattributed to the Dutch master Frans Hals ? is expected to fetch up to $1 million at auction.

"Portrait of a Man," painted in the early 1630s, is being offered at Christie's sale of Old Masters on Wednesday.

A Hals scholar, Seymour Slive, had listed the painting as a "doubtful" Hals in a 1974 catalog, based on a black and white photo of the work.

After Taylor hung it in her home in the 1950s, "It academically fell off the radar," said Nicholas Hall, head of Christie's Old Master paintings.

But last summer, Christie's and Pieter Biesboer, the retired curator of Old Master paintings at the Frans Hals Museum in Holland, confirmed the work was by Hals.

"From 20 yards away one could tell that it was an utterly authentic Hals, a totally characteristic picture with all the bravura, brushwork ... the very expressive face," Hall said in telephone interview.

"On top of everything, there's a signature ? 'FH' just to the right of the figure itself," he added.

Biesboer "absolutely had no hesitation in attributing it to Hals," Hall said.

Before its renewed reattribution, the painting had been estimated to sell for $70,000 to $100,000 on Wednesday. Its current estimate is $700,000 to $1 million.

The painting, showing a gentleman in a black coat and white collar with his hands folded, came into Taylor's possession in the 1950s, soon after her art dealer father, Francis Taylor, acquired and gave it to her.

She hung it over the fireplace in the living room of her California home, near an iconic lithograph portrait of herself by Andy Warhol that sold at Christie's in December for $662,500.

"Portrait of a Man" was the only Old Master she owned, said Hall.

She was very fond of it. In 1956, while recuperating from back surgery at New York Presbyterian Medical Center, she had her hospital room decorated with "Portrait of a Man" and several other paintings, including a Renoir and Monet.

"She really digs the Frans Hals," her husband, Mike Todd, told reporters at the time.

Other paintings from Taylor's collection will be sold by Christie's in London on Feb. 7-8.

In December, the auction house sold her collection of jewelry, fashion and memorabilia. Among the highlights was a pearl necklace that sold for $11.8 million.

The screen and stage icon died in March at age 79.

EPA Urged by Legislators for Valid Probe of Fracking Risks (ContributorNetwork)

There's a lot at stake in the outcome of the Environmental Protection Agency's Final Study Plan to Assess Hydraulic Fracturing: The future of the practice also known as "fracking" and the nations ability to continue to move forward toward energy independence.

Ten senators and two representatives, all Republicans, are pressing EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to ensure the study is done as a "highly influential scientific assessment," according to The Oklahoman.

What Is a Highly Influential Scientific Assessment?

According to the Office of Management and Budget, a highly influential scientific assessment is one that must be a strict minimum of peer review standards over and above what a typical governmental study must provide. Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest and cannot be employed by the agency conducting the study. Committee selection policies must be conducted as specified by the National Academy of Sciences.

Because a study deemed to be a highly influential scientific assessment is a more thorough process than studies of lesser magnitude -- and more costly -- there are criteria that federal agencies use to determine what type of study will be undertaken. The Fort Worth Star Telegram says that among the criteria specified by the OMB, study results that are likely to have an impact of $500 million or more on the private or public sector qualify, as do reports that may be precedent-setting or controversial.

    EPA Study

The EPA study is to determine the potential impacts that hydraulic fracturing might have on groundwater quality. The specific situation is a theorized link between groundwater contamination that has occurred in a Wyoming gas field site and the process of fracking, reports the Star-Telegram. Legislators are asking the reports be completed with the more strict criteria of a highly influential scientific assessment.

What Is the Importance of the Future of Hydraulic Fracturing to Oklahoma?

More than 100,000 gas/oil wells have been developed using hydraulic fracturing in Oklahoma, as reported in the 2011 Oklahoma Hydraulic Fracturing State Review. Fracking, according to the review, has been going on in the state for more than 60 years without evidence of groundwater contamination.

Save the State of the Union!

For a political speech, the State of the Union is surprisingly riveting drama. The pomp of the president entering the legislative chamber to rousing applause as members of Congress jockey to get a presidential nod or handshake makes good TV, and suggests that what happens in Washington still matters.

Bullied as a kid, Peter Jackson fights back on film (Reuters)

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuters) ? The high-profile case of the West Memphis Three murderers might seem like an odd choice of films for director Peter Jackson, but the "Lord of the Rings" maker has come to Sundance with a documentary about the case and a new revelation of a possible suspect.

Jackson, who helped bankroll the defense of the three convicted killers who are now out of jail nearly 20 years after the crime, and the legal team claim they have testimony that the stepfather of one of the victims is the real murderer.

Whether that allegation eventually proves true will await prosecutors' action in West Memphis, Arkansas where the murders took place in 1993, and so far the prosecution has stuck by its belief they had the right culprits all along.

But where Jackson and one of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echols, are concerned, their documentary "West of Memphis" and this new testimony takes the fight further.

"It's got to be dealt with," Jackson told Reuters on Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival. "You can't just leave a murder case like that hanging in the air."

The high-profile case of the West Memphis Three who were tried and convicted as teens of murdering three boys prompted a call to action for Jackson when first told the disturbing tale of the young men linked to a grisly murder who were ultimately released from prison in August 2011.

"I was bullied and regarded as little bit of an oddball myself," Jackson told Reuters on Saturday. "And I see that happening to somebody else, so I just want to help them."

Jackson and director Amy Berg debuted "West of Memphis" at Sundance on Friday, and simultaneously defense lawyers issued a press release detailing their new revelations.

The documentary follows the case of what many believe was the wrongful conviction of Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were teenagers when they were accused of killing three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993.

The case already has been made famous by the HBO documentary series "Paradise Lost," but the story of the three jailed boys struck a chord in the Jackson and his wife and producing partner Fran Walsh as far back as 2005.

"It's an American story but it's a human story as well," Jackson said. "When you look at the original 'Paradise Lost' film, you see three kids who can't defend themselves, being persecuted in a medieval way -- witchcraft, satanic worship. It was kind of primitive. It makes you angry, so Fran and I contacted (Echols' wife) Lorri Davis and asked what we could do to help."

Jackson said he and Walsh funded the defense team's investigation anonymously, spending "more than thousands" of dollars paying bills for such things as DNA tests and sending investigators to interview additional witnesses.

"We're still doing that," Jackson said.

Only one week ago, he said, the filmmakers shot and edited the new revelation into the documentary, but they had no time to include the footage in early screenings.

    NEW REVELATION

According to Jackson, Echols and the defense team, the nephew of Terry Hobbs -- Michael Hobbs, Jr. -- has told friends that his uncle committed the crime. Terry Hobbs' stepson, Stevie Branch, was among the murder victims.

Hobbs has long denied any wrongdoing and police have never considered him a suspect, according to media reports. Reuters was unable to reach Hobbs for comment.

For Jackson, the idea of actually making a documentary on the West Memphis Three didn't arise until 2008, after DNA and forensic findings paid for by Jackson and Walsh, were dismissed by the original judge presiding over the trial. He found the evidence as not being compelling enough to reopen the case.

"Whenever new evidence came and we tried to present it to the judge, he refused to hear it," said Echols, now 37. He and his wife are producers on the film alongside Jackson and Walsh.

"The only way to let the public know what was going on with this case was by doing a documentary. It was Peter's idea of 'well, why don't we get this evidence out to the public if the courts are going to refuse to hear it?'"

"West of Memphis" follows the three convicted killers until just after they were released last August in a legal maneuver known as an "Alford Plea," whereby the men plead guilty in their own best interest while asserting innocence.

But the trio, their families, their lawyers, Jackson, Walsh and director Berg haven't stopped fighting.

"You have to push this hard in order to get a reaction," said Berg. "I feel that we have gone further than anybody else has gone and we've put it out there for people to act."

The film received strong initial reviews from critics here at Sundance. The Hollywood Reporter labeled it a "gripping overall picture of the West Memphis 3 wrongful-conviction saga" and summed up, "Thorny, blood-boiling and finely made, it deserves a theatrical push."

Should the World Ignore the Presidential Campaign Foreign Policy Debates? (Time.com)

As Republican presidential contenders prepare for yet another televised primary debate in South Carolina on Thursday, much of the world may be wondering who'll be the next victim of some ignorant insult. Already, the GOP primary season has seen the Palestinians branded an "invented" people by Newt Gingrich; Herman Cain making light of his indifference to Uzbekistan; and Rick Perry telling the Turks that the government they have twice elected is headed by "Islamic terrorists." (MORE: What You Missed While Not Watching the Fox News South Carolina GOP Debate)

Even if you set aside the Halloween antics from his challengers -- Gingrich advocating military means to topple Iran's regime, say, or Perry's call for a re-invasion of Iraq -- even some of the more sober pronouncements of front runner Mitt Romney seems to portend a radical shakeup of U.S. foreign policy. Romney has, after all,

    * attacked Obama for negotiating a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia, which he says is trying to recreate the Soviet Union;
    * accused the President of "throwing Israel under a bus";
    * rejected any negotiations with the Taliban;
    * promised to declare China a currency manipulator and take appropriate action; and, most ominously, declared
    * "If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon ... If you elect me as president, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon."

Tough talk, to be sure, but foreign policy vows made on the presidential campaign trail -- at least those that promise significant changes -- are almost invariably forgotten by the winning candidate once in office. The antiwar Democrats who propelled President Barack Obama to his party's nomination might ruefully recall his promises to close the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, for example, while few would have much good to say about his doubling down on the war in Afghanistan or his Iran policy. Sure, he oversaw the ending of the Iraq war, but simply by sticking to the agreement concluded with the Iraqi government by President George W. Bush in December 2008 (a fact conveniently ignored, certainly, by some of the current crop of Republicans berating Obama over Iraq).

Foreign policy discussion on the hustings, particularly in a year when Americans' overwhelming concern is the domestic economy, requires that candidates please the crowd with dramatic statements, always casting themselves as tougher and more principled than the incumbent, while making promises unmoored to the realities faced by those in power.

Attacking a Democratic president as weak on national security (regardless of his performance) is a well-established trope for Republicans, just as trash-talking China and promising to love Israel more and better than the incumbent has become a campaign standard for candidates of both parties. (MORE: If 2011 Was a Turbulent Year for Obama's Foreign Policy, 2012 Looks Set to Be Worse)

Bill Clinton on the campaign trail in '92 promised to get tougher on what he called "the butchers of Beijing" than President George H.W. Bush had been; but in 2000 it was George W. Bush promised to get tougher on China than Clinton had been. Obama took up the cudgels in 2008, vowing to challenge China's currency manipulation and urging Bush to consider boycotting the Olympic Games opening ceremony and demanding that he press China to negotiate with the Dalai Lama. Now, it's Romney who is promising to be tougher on China than President Obama has been. And yet, despite these rhetorical flourishes and occasional tactical adjustments, U.S. China policy has been remarkably consistent over the past six presidential terms.

Candidate Clinton also sought to distinguish himself from President Bush (41) on Israel, promising to demonstrate his love by moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Congress in 1995 even passed a law recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and stating that "the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999." The legislation did allow the President, at six-monthly intervals, to waive implementing the decision if the interests of "national security" required it -- and that's what Clinton did for the remainder of his presidency. Candidate George W. Bush promised that, unlike Clinton, he would move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but he too waived the issue every six months, keeping up pretense by adding the sentence "My Administration remains committed to beginning the process of moving our embassy to Jerusalem" each time he signed the waiver.

Candidate Obama in 2008 made no mention of the embassy issue, but vowed that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided." But the U.S. hasn't formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and its embassy remains in Tel Aviv. Moreover, Obama demanded that Israel halt settlement construction in East Jerusalem, which Israel's partisans say makes nonsense of his "undivided" pledge. And, of course, he has continued to sign the six-monthly waiver, just as Bush and Clinton did

Sure enough, Gingrich, Santorum and Perry are now making the same embassy promise as Clinton did in 1992. Romney, confident of winning the nomination, has stopped short of promising to move the embassy, saying only that he would consult with the Israeli government before making such a move. Of course, the Israeli government would very much like the U.S. embassy to be in the city it calls its capital, but still -- don't bet on an embassy move. Nor, for that matter a significant change in China policy. Negotiations with the Taliban are unavoidable if the U.S. plans ever to leave Afghanistan. The Russia missile treaty was ratified with the support of nearly half the Republicans in the Senate, and had the backing of the nation's military chiefs and such stalwarts of the GOP foreign policy establishment as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Aside from more public displays of affection such as visiting Israel, it's hard to see how in substantial policy terms Romney would demonstrate greater commitment to Israel than Obama is currently doing. And promising that Iran will have a nuclear weapon if Obama is president but won't if Romney wins the White House is a dangerous boast: For one thing, U.S. and even Israeli intelligence concurs that Iran is not currently building nuclear weapons and has not, in fact, decided to do so as yet; and the Pentagon has warned that even military action would at best delay Iran's progress by a year or two should it decide to pursue nuclear weapons.

Reading through Romney's more detailed foreign policy statement what's striking is that despite one or two specific changes, its overall thrust suggests a basic continuity in U.S. foreign policy, simply promising to do it better than Obama has done. Sure, things could turn out very differently: The "humble" foreign policy promised by candidate George W. Bush in 2000 makes President Obama look like a neocon, for example. The sound and fury of the campaign trail, in other words, signifies very little about how the candidates will conduct foreign policy once in office.

Hmmm interesting the last star wars RP I was in bombed but I'm always willing to try a new one. So are you wanting canons like Luke, Leia, Han Solo. And they're involvement in the new republic.

People can play canons if they want to, but keep in mind the New Republic has completely failed before it even started in this timeline.

What is the status of the Jedi Order at this time? In this RP, has the New Jedi Order arisen?

It wouldn't be too far fetched that a New Jedi Order has risen. After the Rebellion failed, Luke probably could've selected a planet to start training new Jedi on. I'm mostly leaving this up to other people, so if you'd like to be in control of the New Jedi Order and a Rebellion Holdout you're more than welcome too.

Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis near split: report (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Johnny Depp's 14-year romance with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis has hit the rocks, People magazine claimed on Wednesday, and the couple are living largely separate lives.

In a cover story for this week's issue of People called "Love Gone Wrong", the celebrity magazine quoted several unnamed sources as saying the pair's relationship is nearing an end.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star, 48, and Paradis, 39, never married but have been together since 1998 and have two children. They divide their time between France and the United States.

People magazine noted that the pair have not appeared on the red carpet together for more than a year, missing both the Cannes film festival in May 2011 and the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday, where Depp was a presenter.

"According to multiple sources....(they) are all but officially finished," People said.

Depp's representatives did not return calls for comment on the People story, which hits newsstands on Friday.
