Bee Gee Robin Gibb makes "spectacular" recovery (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb said on Friday he had made a "spectacular" recovery from a serious illness, which was widely reported to be cancer.

The 62-year-old, most famous as a founding member of the disco-era hit machine the Bee Gees, told BBC Radio 2:

"Well, it's all simple. I was diagnosed with a growth in my colon. It was removed. And I've been treated for that by a brilliant doctor, and in their own words 'the results have been spectacular'."

Media speculation about his deteriorating health was sparked by his gaunt and frail appearance in recent months. Some reports went so far as to suggest he was close to death, claims Gibb said had been unfounded.

"I mean the fact is, I've never spoken to anybody about my condition or the condition that I was in and a lot of them go over the top to the point where they're telling me things that I didn't even know about myself," he said.

"The prognosis is that it's almost gone and I feel fantastic and really from now on it's just what they could describe as a 'mopping-up' operation. I am very active and my sense of well-being is good."

Gibb has just finished recording his first ever classical work with son Robin-John called "The Titanic Requiem" which is due for release on March 19.

On February 13 he is due to make his live comeback at London's Palladium.

Sudan, Egypt abductions highlight risks to Chinese (AP)

BEIJING ? A group of Chinese workers was freed Wednesday, a day after being taken hostage in Egypt, while another group of workers remained captive for a fifth day in Sudan, in separate incidents that show the dangers China faces as its worldwide presence grows.

China has developed strong economic ties in volatile nations in Africa and elsewhere, in large part to meet its growing needs for energy and other raw materials. At the same time it is facing growing pressure at home to protect citizens who fall into harm's way abroad.

In Egypt, 25 cement factory workers were grabbed Tuesday on their way to work in the northern Sinai city of Arish but were freed in good condition, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. Their captors, Xinhua said, were Egyptians who had blocked the road outside Arish for days to demand the release of relatives detained for attacks in the Sinai years ago and to demand an end to natural gas sales to Israel.

In contrast to the quick resolution of the Egypt hostage-taking, the ordeal of 29 Chinese workers from dam and engineering firm Sinohydro Group has dragged on since their kidnapping by rebels in the Sudan's South Kordofan region on Saturday.

Their plight has drawn heavy media attention in China, and Beijing has sent a crisis team to Sudan, where Chinese companies have investments in oil and construction projects.

"As far as we know, the Chinese workers are safe. They are safe. They are not hurt," the head of the security team, Qiu Xuejun, told Chinese state television in Khartoum.

China also is pressuring Sudan, a diplomatic partner. A senior Chinese Foreign Ministry official summoned the Sudanese Embassy's top diplomat on Tuesday to stress Beijing's concern.

"The Chinese government attaches great importance to protecting overseas Chinese nationals," Vice Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

China hopes Sudan will "keep in mind the overall situation of bilateral friendship" and ensure their swift release, Xie told Sudanese Charge d'Affaires Omer Eisa Ahmed, according to the statement.

The kidnappings and Beijing's energetic response highlight what tempting targets Chinese have become as they grow richer and travel the world for work and for pleasure. Ensuring the safety of Chinese lives and assets has become a litmus test for the authoritarian government, which wants to prove to the public that China is powerful and respected around the world.

The public has increasingly expected an effective and at times muscular defense of Chinese rights, and social media have given vent to these expectations. In recent months, scuffles between Chinese fishermen and South Korean coastal patrols and the killing of Chinese boat crews along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia have brought calls for retaliation.

"Saved in Sudan, detained in Egypt, beaten in South Korea and murdered on the Mekong. How can this be?" race car driver Wei Daofu said Wednesday on a posting on Sina Corporation's Twitter-like Weibo service.

An estimated 60 million Chinese went abroad in 2010 and a projected 75 million likely did so in 2011, putting a strain on China's diplomatic corps to track them and provide protection, the state-run Guangzhou Daily reported this week on its website. The report quoted a scholar with a Foreign Ministry think tank who listed five potential trouble spots where China has significant investments: Sudan, Iran, Central Asia, Pakistan and Myanmar.

Many commentators say Chinese workers are vulnerable because Chinese companies searching for energy and other natural resources are often forced to operate in volatile parts of the world because safer areas are monopolized by Western firms.

"The issue of Chinese workers being abducted overseas is not a new one, especially in countries in Africa and Asia. The question is that China is widely engaged in a whole range of businesses overseas," said Zhu Feng, an international affairs expert at Peking University. "More often than not, Chinese workers in politically unstable countries would become subject for exploitation by local militant groups and illegal armed forces, who want to make deals with or stage protests against the local governments."

When Libya began splintering in the civil war that eventually overthrew Moammar Gadhafi last year, some 30,000 Chinese were working in the country. The Chinese military orchestrated a large-scale evacuation, sending ships and planes.

Xinhua said the 29 people kidnapped in Sudan were among 47 Chinese workers were caught in an attack in South Kordofan. The other 18 workers fled, and one of them remains missing, the agency said. The attack took place near Abbasiya town, 390 miles (630 kilometers) south of Khartoum.

Sudanese officials have blamed the attack on the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, a branch of a guerrilla movement that has fought various regimes in Khartoum for decades. Its members come from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan says the accusations are a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

Beijing has tried to maneuver through the dispute, building ties with South Sudan, where many of the oil fields are located, while maintaining its long-standing relations with Sudan, through which pipelines run for export.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Jordan Taylor scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer from the top of key with 1:44 left, to help No. 19 Wisconsin hold off Penn State 52-46 on Tuesday night for its sixth straight victory.

Taylor made six free throws over the final minute, helping the Badgers (18-5, 7-3 Big Ten) overcome an early nine-point deficit.

Trailing 40-38, Penn State (10-13, 2-8) missed on three tries to tie or take the lead. Jon Graham missed two foul shots before Jermaine Marshall misfired on a 3 and missed a layup after grabbing his own rebound.

Taylor took over from there with his clutch 3. He scored 13 of Wisconsin's last 17 points.

Tim Frazier led Penn State with 21 points.

Penn State coach Patrick Chambers wore jet-black Nike sneakers on the sideline, sporting a look like late Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno.

Six-foot-10 center Jared Berggren added eight points and 10 rebounds for Wisconsin, helping to get the offense going down low in the second half after his team struggled from the field early.

Berggren scored six of the Badgers' first eight points of the second half, before Taylor closed it out.

The much-anticipated point guard matchup with Taylor and Frazier got off to a slow start with the two combining for just nine points in the first half.

They seemed to go back-and-forth down the stretch in the second.

Frazier scored 17 points after halftime, often maneuvering in the lane around the Badgers' tough defense for mid-range jumpers or one-handed floaters. Wisconsin was allowing just 49.6 points per game on opponents' 36 percent shooting ? both NCAA lows.

Penn State shot 36 percent for the game but made just seven field goals in the second half, six by Frazier.

His jumper got the Nittany Lions within 40-38 with 3:36 left, setting up the stage for the potential late heroics by Graham and Marshall.

Instead, it was Taylor who stole the show ? as usual.

He finished 4 of 12 from the field but 8 of 10 from the foul line. He added five assists and three rebounds.

Ryan Evans added 11 points and six rebounds for the Badgers, who got a nice lift going into Saturday's showdown at against No. 3 Ohio State.

Marshall finished with 13 points, 10 in the first half. He scored six points during a 10-0 run to help Penn State build an 18-9 lead late in the first half.

It was Penn State's first home game since Paterno died Jan. 22 from lung cancer, a little more than two months after he was fired from the school in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant coach. Paterno was never charged in the scandal.

A public memorial service for Paterno was held on the same Jordan Center court on Thursday.

Chambers and his coaching staff were already scheduled to wear sneakers Tuesday night as part of Coaches vs. Cancer awareness week. Chambers took it a step further in apparent honor of Paterno by wearing rolled-up khakis ? just like JoePa used to across the street from the Jordan Center at Beaver Stadium.

Android users most likely to use phones on toilet

The next time an Android user mocks your shiny new iPhone or BlackBerry, just smile, nod ... and avoid touching his phone. Because odds are quite high that the device has been used while its owner sat on the toilet at some point?? and who knows if he even washed his hands.

According to a survey conducted by?marketing agency 11mark, about three-fourths of Americans with mobile phones admit that they have occasionally used their devices in the bathroom.

74 percent of men and 76 percent of women reported that they took their mobile phones into the bathroom, so there wasn't a large gender gap. Instead it was their device types which divided the toilet texters (and talkers) from those who prefer to disconnect while in the lavatory.?

It seems that 87 percent of Android users admitted to using their mobile phones while on the throne. In comparison, 84 percent of BlackBerry users and only 77 percent of iPhone users took their phones into the little girls' and boys' rooms.

The BlackBerry users were the ones most likely to answer a call than the others though. According to the survey, "75 percent of BlackBerry users report they have done so, versus 67 percent of Droid and 60 percent of iPhone users."

I hope they at least hang up before flushing.

Indian air force to buy 126 Rafale fighter jets

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India has decided to buy 126 French-made Rafale combat aircraft for the Indian air force, clinching a massive $11 billion defense deal, a top government official said Tuesday.

The French aviation company Dassault snapped up the $11 billion deal after emerging with the lowest bid in a two-way competition against the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, the official said.

The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters about the sensitive defense deal.

Planes from Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin of the United States and from Russian and Swedish makers were dropped from consideration earlier.

The deal is the 1st foreign deal for Dassault's Rafale fighter jets.

India, the world's biggest arms importer, is being wooed by major international arms manufacturers as it replaces its obsolete Soviet-era weapons.

Eighteen fighter aircraft will be delivered in "fly away" condition within 36 months and the remaining 108 are to be built by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. through technology transfers.

Defense ministry experts were still fine-tuning pricing details, including the cost of on-board weaponry and royalties for producing the aircraft in India.

Olivier Dassault, a French lawmaker and the son of Groupe Dassault chairman Serge Dassault, said the deal was very good news for the French aviation industry.

"It's a program on which more than 500 companies are cooperating," he said. "It's a victory for all these small- and medium-sized, high-tech companies who take part in building the most beautiful airplane in the world."

The French have for years been trying to get an export deal. Just last month, French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet warned the Rafale program could be stopped if foreign buyers don't materialize.

Longuet maintained that the Rafale is an "excellent plane" but acknowledged it is handicapped by its price, which is higher than its U.S. rival.

The Rafale, in service for the French Air Force since 2006, has been flying air support roles in Afghanistan since 2007, and was a big part of the NATO air campaign against Moammar Gadhafi's forces in Libya in 2011.
